Capsule hotels aren’t exactly the most glamorous places to stay, but their unconventional style makes them somewhere that I would like to say I have visited. The rooms vary in size, depending on the hotel, ranging from the size of a single bed to a large cupboard. Although similar hotels now exist in London, a city closer to me, I would still want to visit the hotels in Japan, where they originated.

I visited Mexico quite recently and while I was booking day trips at the tourist desk in my hotel I noticed a pamphlet advertising trips to swim with the worlds largest fish: the whale shark. Unfortunately for me, the next trip available for me to go on wasn’t till the next week when I would be back in Scotland but I hope to return to mexico at one point and swim with whale sharks. There is a small problem however as increasing numbers of tourist could be scaring whale sharks away from the area and by the time I return to mexico I may have missed my chance.

I’ve only really learned about this hotel recently but it’s definitely somewhere that i would want to visit. The Icehotel in Sweden is the first and largest ice hotel in the world but it isn’t just a hotel, it is a work of art. The hotel is a temporary ice structure that is reconstructed for January each year. It is made almost entirely of ice and snow and has to be kept at a constant temperature of -5°C. Furnishings include reindeer skins and fantastic ice structures. Even the glasses at the ice bar are made of ice. Other than hitting the ice bar, activities available to check out include ice-sculpting classes and trips to see the northern lights or for those more adventurous than myself, the conditions are perfect for snow sports. The ice hotel only lasts between December and April each year so if, like me, you would like to visit  the hotel, book online at www.icehotel.com before the sun takes it down. If Sweden isn’t to your liking however, other similar hotels exist all over the world, in Canada, Norway, Romania and Finland.
